The thermostat installation symptoms we hear most
- The screen is completely blank Dead batteries, tripped breaker or a lost 24-volt control circuit
- It says 72 and the room feels like 80 Failed sensor, bad placement in sun or draft, or miscalibrated control
- The new smart thermostat keeps rebooting Missing common wire, so it is power stealing off the control circuit
- Upstairs bakes while downstairs is freezing One thermostat trying to serve two load zones. A candidate for zoning controls
- Auxiliary heat runs when it is 50 degrees outside Heat pump staging or balance point set wrong after a thermostat swap
Whether you call it thermostat installation or thermostat replacement, the work is identical and so is the quote you approve first.
Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Replace the thermostat batteries if your model takes them, and make sure the door is seated.
- 2Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker on the air handler or furnace circuit.
- 3Confirm the thermostat is set to heat or cool rather than off or fan only, and that the setpoint is actually past room temperature.
- 4Change the filter, since a clogged filter can shut a system down on a limit and make the thermostat look like the problem.

Can any smart thermostat go on my system?
Not always. Heat pumps with auxiliary heat, dual fuel setups and older multi stage furnaces need specific wiring and configuration. We check what your wall wiring and equipment support first, then tell you what will actually control the system correctly.
What is a common wire and why does it matter?
A common wire gives a smart thermostat continuous 24-volt power instead of borrowing it from the heating or cooling circuit. Without one you get reboots, phantom calls and short cycling. We either run a common wire or install the correct adapter.
How long does a thermostat replacement take?
Most straight swaps take under an hour, including configuration and a test run in both heating and cooling. Adding a common wire, correcting old wiring or setting up a heat pump with staging takes longer. We tell you before we start.
Will a new thermostat fix my hot and cold rooms?
Usually not by itself. Uneven temperatures normally come from duct layout, attic heat gain or air balance. A thermostat only reads one spot. Zoning controls with dampers and a second sensor are what actually split the house.
Can I keep my old thermostat if it still works?
Yes, if it controls every stage of your equipment properly. We do recommend replacing mercury and worn mechanical controls, because loose contacts and drifting calibration make a system run longer than it needs to.
What are zoning controls?
Zoning uses motorized dampers in the ductwork and a thermostat or sensor in each zone, so the system sends air where it is needed. It works best when the duct system has the capacity for it, which we verify before quoting.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill out the quote form and describe what the system is doing. Warm air, short cycling, water on the floor, a smell, a noise. That detail tells us what parts to load on the truck.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behaviour and the ductwork. You hear what we found in plain language before anything gets replaced or repaired.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain the repair, what it costs and what happens if you wait a season. Nothing gets done without your go-ahead, and we tell you honestly when a repair no longer makes sense.

Why homeowners call us
- We know humid-climate systemsAcross the region the real enemy is moisture. Systems here run long hours pulling water out of the air, and that shows up as frozen coils, clogged drains and mildew smells. We diagnose for humidity, not just temperature.
- Mixed gas and heat pump workPlenty of homes we visit run a heat pump with gas backup, and the two have to hand off cleanly. We troubleshoot both sides, including defrost boards, reversing valves, ignitors and heat exchanger concerns.
- Attic ductwork is our daily breadMid-century homes often have ducts running through attics that hit brutal temperatures. Crushed runs, disconnected boots and leaking joints steal cooling before it reaches the room. We find them instead of blaming the equipment.
- Repair before replaceA capacitor, a contactor, a blower motor or a clogged drain line fixes a lot of the calls we take. We would rather fix what you have and tell you plainly when the numbers stop working.
