Top-rated independent heating and cooling across central Arkansas and the Arkansas River Valley

Capacitor & Fan Motor Replacement

We replace failed run capacitors and condenser or blower fan motors on residential AC systems across Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. If your outdoor unit hums but the fan blades sit still, the AC runs and never cools, or the blower quits while the compressor keeps going, that is the usual sign. Turn the thermostat to off at the breaker if the unit is humming, then call us. These are high-voltage parts that hold a charge, so leave the panel closed and let us handle the test and swap.

What the job actually involves

We shut down power at the disconnect and the breaker, open the electrical compartment, and safely discharge the capacitor before touching anything. Then we read the capacitor against its rated microfarad value and check the motor windings, bearings and amp draw under load. If the part is out of spec, we install a matched replacement, verify rotation and airflow, and watch a full cooling cycle. Wiring, contactor condition and the disconnect get a look too, because a bad capacitor is often a symptom of something upstream.

What we check and install

Most calls come down to a dual run capacitor serving the compressor and condenser fan, a single capacitor on the indoor blower, or the motor itself. We stock common capacitor values and condenser fan motors, plus universal blower motors for older mid-century systems where the original part is long gone. We also check the contactor, low-voltage control wiring, blade balance and the fan shroud. In the region's heat, a motor running with a weak capacitor pulls high amps and cooks itself, so we correct both together.

How we decide replacement is the right call

Numbers decide it, not guesswork. A capacitor reading well below its rated value gets replaced. A motor that draws over its nameplate amps, has rough or seized bearings, or trips on internal overload after a short run gets replaced. If a motor tests fine and the capacitor was the only fault, we say so and stop there. When the compressor is also failing or the unit has a refrigerant leak, we lay out what the repair buys you before you spend on parts.

Capacitor & Fan Motor Replacement — quick answers

How long does a capacitor or fan motor replacement take?

A capacitor swap is usually under an hour once we have tested the system. A condenser or blower motor takes longer because we match the part, transfer the blade or wheel, and confirm airflow and amp draw on a full cycle.

Why did my capacitor fail so soon after the last one?

Repeat failures point to something else, often a struggling motor pulling high amps, a pitted contactor, low voltage, or heat build-up around the unit. We test the motor and controls so the new capacitor is not carrying a hidden problem.

Can I replace the capacitor myself?

We do not recommend it. Capacitors store a dangerous electrical charge even after power is off, and the wrong microfarad rating can damage the motor or compressor. Safe checks at home are limited to the thermostat, breaker and filter.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill out the quote form and describe what the system is doing. Warm air, short cycling, water on the floor, a smell, a noise. That detail tells us what parts to load on the truck.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behaviour and the ductwork. You hear what we found in plain language before anything gets replaced or repaired.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the fix

We explain the repair, what it costs and what happens if you wait a season. Nothing gets done without your go-ahead, and we tell you honestly when a repair no longer makes sense.

Why homeowners call us

  • We know humid-climate systemsAcross the region the real enemy is moisture. Systems here run long hours pulling water out of the air, and that shows up as frozen coils, clogged drains and mildew smells. We diagnose for humidity, not just temperature.
  • Mixed gas and heat pump workPlenty of homes we visit run a heat pump with gas backup, and the two have to hand off cleanly. We troubleshoot both sides, including defrost boards, reversing valves, ignitors and heat exchanger concerns.
  • Attic ductwork is our daily breadMid-century homes often have ducts running through attics that hit brutal temperatures. Crushed runs, disconnected boots and leaking joints steal cooling before it reaches the room. We find them instead of blaming the equipment.
  • Repair before replaceA capacitor, a contactor, a blower motor or a clogged drain line fixes a lot of the calls we take. We would rather fix what you have and tell you plainly when the numbers stop working.
