What the replacement job involves
We start at the equipment, not the wall. A thermostat gets blamed for problems that come from a tripped safety, a bad control board or a low charge, so we confirm the system responds before we sell anyone a new control. Once the thermostat is the actual fault, we shut power down, photograph and label the existing wiring, remove the old unit and check that the wire bundle has the conductors the new control needs. Then we mount level, terminate clean, restore power and configure the settings.
What we check and what we install
We check the wire count first, because older homes across the region often have four or five conductors run decades ago with no common wire. That decides whether we install a control that runs without one or pull new cable. We verify the staging your system needs, single stage cooling, two stage heat, or a heat pump with reversing valve orientation and auxiliary heat lockout. After installation we run a full cycle in heating and cooling, watch the changeover, and confirm the temperature reading settles where it should.
How we decide replacement is the right call
Repair is rare on a thermostat, so the decision is usually about whether the control is the problem at all. A thermostat that reads several degrees off, loses its program, clicks without a response from the equipment, or cannot hold a schedule is done. A control that simply looks dated but runs the system correctly can stay. We also replace when the existing unit cannot manage the equipment, which happens when a heat pump goes in behind a thermostat that was wired for a gas furnace only.

My thermostat screen is blank. Does that always mean replacement?
No. Start with fresh batteries and check for a tripped breaker. A blank screen can also come from a blown low voltage fuse or a safety switch on the equipment, which we test before recommending a new thermostat.
Can any thermostat run my heat pump?
No. Heat pumps need a control that handles the reversing valve and auxiliary heat staging. Installing a basic furnace thermostat on a heat pump causes backup heat to run when it should not, which drives up runtime.
What if my house has no common wire?
That is common in older homes across the region. We either install a control designed to run without one, add an adapter at the equipment, or pull new cable, depending on how the existing wiring is routed.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill out the quote form and describe what the system is doing. Warm air, short cycling, water on the floor, a smell, a noise. That detail tells us what parts to load on the truck.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behaviour and the ductwork. You hear what we found in plain language before anything gets replaced or repaired.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain the repair, what it costs and what happens if you wait a season. Nothing gets done without your go-ahead, and we tell you honestly when a repair no longer makes sense.

Why homeowners call us
- We know humid-climate systemsAcross the region the real enemy is moisture. Systems here run long hours pulling water out of the air, and that shows up as frozen coils, clogged drains and mildew smells. We diagnose for humidity, not just temperature.
- Mixed gas and heat pump workPlenty of homes we visit run a heat pump with gas backup, and the two have to hand off cleanly. We troubleshoot both sides, including defrost boards, reversing valves, ignitors and heat exchanger concerns.
- Attic ductwork is our daily breadMid-century homes often have ducts running through attics that hit brutal temperatures. Crushed runs, disconnected boots and leaking joints steal cooling before it reaches the room. We find them instead of blaming the equipment.
- Repair before replaceA capacitor, a contactor, a blower motor or a clogged drain line fixes a lot of the calls we take. We would rather fix what you have and tell you plainly when the numbers stop working.
