Top-rated independent heating and cooling across central Arkansas and the Arkansas River Valley

Zoning Controls

We install and repair zoning controls, the dampers, zone panels and thermostats that let one heating and cooling system treat your upstairs and downstairs as separate rooms. Homeowners across Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas call us when the bedrooms stay hot while the living room runs cold, or when a zone board has quit and one half of the house gets nothing. Call us and describe which rooms fight each other and at what time of day. That tells us a lot before we ever pull a panel cover.

What a zoning job actually involves

Zoning splits your ductwork into sections, each with a motorized damper and its own thermostat, all answered by a zone control panel wired to the air handler or furnace. We map the existing duct runs first, because zoning a system with undersized trunk lines just moves the problem around. Then we set damper locations, run thermostat wire, mount the panel and program the bypass or staging so the equipment is not fighting closed dampers. Most retrofits take a day, sometimes two on older homes with tight attic access.

What we check and install

We check static pressure, return air capacity, blower speed settings and the condition of the duct itself, since attic runs in this region bake all summer and leak at the joints. On repairs we test damper motors, transformer voltage, zone panel outputs and thermostat wiring for shorts. On new installs we set dampers, a compatible zone panel, thermostats per zone, and any pressure relief the system needs. If the equipment is a heat pump or a dual fuel setup, we confirm the panel handles staging and auxiliary heat correctly.

How we decide zoning is the right call

Zoning is right when the rooms differ by design and not by defect. A second floor that runs eight degrees warmer because heat rises is a zoning candidate. A single room that is hot because a flex duct is crushed behind a joist is a duct repair, and adding dampers would waste your money. So we measure airflow at the registers, look at the return path, and check the duct in the attic before we recommend anything. Sometimes sealing and rebalancing solves it and you keep one thermostat.

Zoning Controls — quick answers

Can I add zoning to the system I already have?

Often yes, if the duct layout splits cleanly and the blower can handle staged airflow. We check static pressure and return capacity first. Some older systems need duct work before zoning will behave.

Why does one zone blow nothing at all?

Usually a failed damper motor, a burnt transformer or a zone panel output that has quit. You can confirm the thermostat has fresh batteries and that its vents are open, then call us for the wiring and panel testing.

Do I need a thermostat for every zone?

Yes, each zone needs its own thermostat telling the panel what that part of the house wants. We match thermostats to the zone panel and to your equipment type, including heat pump and dual fuel staging.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill out the quote form and describe what the system is doing. Warm air, short cycling, water on the floor, a smell, a noise. That detail tells us what parts to load on the truck.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behaviour and the ductwork. You hear what we found in plain language before anything gets replaced or repaired.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the fix

We explain the repair, what it costs and what happens if you wait a season. Nothing gets done without your go-ahead, and we tell you honestly when a repair no longer makes sense.

Why homeowners call us

  • We know humid-climate systemsAcross the region the real enemy is moisture. Systems here run long hours pulling water out of the air, and that shows up as frozen coils, clogged drains and mildew smells. We diagnose for humidity, not just temperature.
  • Mixed gas and heat pump workPlenty of homes we visit run a heat pump with gas backup, and the two have to hand off cleanly. We troubleshoot both sides, including defrost boards, reversing valves, ignitors and heat exchanger concerns.
  • Attic ductwork is our daily breadMid-century homes often have ducts running through attics that hit brutal temperatures. Crushed runs, disconnected boots and leaking joints steal cooling before it reaches the room. We find them instead of blaming the equipment.
  • Repair before replaceA capacitor, a contactor, a blower motor or a clogged drain line fixes a lot of the calls we take. We would rather fix what you have and tell you plainly when the numbers stop working.
